Job Description:

This position is part of the Molecular Diagnostic/Epidemiology Unit, responsible for performing a variety of highly complex laboratory tests to identify bacteriologic and viral nucleic acids of public health significance. This position will provide laboratory support to maintain and enhance laboratory diagnostic capacity across the NCSLPH laboratories including food borne outbreak investigation, surveillance of CRE, and surveillance, detection, and characterization of bacterial and viral pathogens. This position is expected to be trained and work in areas of molecular testing which are supported by the Molecular Diagnostic / Epidemiology Laboratory Unit. Additionally, this position will be expected to perform testing of clinical bacterial and reference specimens submitted for culture and/or identification.

Qualifications:
  • Meet the CLIA '88 requirements for testing personnel in a high complexity laboratory. (Candidates must attach a copy of their transcripts to the application or provide an unofficial copy of their transcripts at the time of the interview.)
  • Have experience working at Biosafety level 2+, using proper containment techniques where personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
  • Have experience with clinical microbiology and virology conventional and molecular methods including PCR and gel electrophoresis.
  • Have experience in PCR, gel electrophoresis, nucleic acid sequencing, and comprehensive understanding of the best practices used to ensure high quality, accurate and timely molecular test results.
  • Have clinical laboratory experience growing and isolating bacteria and viruses.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the hazards of working with potentially infectious materials and the appropriate safety precautions to avoid infections.
  • Demonstrate an attention to detail, safety, documentation, and flexibility in workflow and assignments.
Management Preferences:
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to instruct others in highly complex technical procedures.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science or medical technology.
  • Experience in a clinical diagnostic, molecular, and/or public health laboratory.
  • Work well independently or with a team.
  • Demonstrated competency in using BSL 2 work practices when conducting clinical laboratory testing.
  • Experience using laboratory information management systems.

Degrees/majors wanted: Bachelor of Science and/or above in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science, medical technology.
