Seasonal Legislative Aide

The City of Minneapolis Office of Intergovernmental Relations (IGR) advocates for the City at various governmental levels. This position has been a pathway for careers in government relations and public policy, and is a hands-on in-depth introduction to local and state government.

The Seasonal Legislative Aide will work with IGR staff as they advocate for the City of Minneapolis' legislative agenda at the Minnesota state legislature. This position is involved in policy research-monitoring, analysis, and development for a broad range of topics. It provides opportunities for professional networking and development opportunities.

The most successful candidate for this position will have an understanding of the Minnesota state legislature, an interest in legislative/local government policy issues, and a desire to work in a fast-paced, engaging, and analytical work environment.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, temporary opening, for up to six months beginning early to mid January 2018. This position will include late hours, weekends, and unpredictable schedules once the legislative session begins.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist IGR staff with implementation of legislative agenda at the Capitol.
  • Track legislative issues before the Minnesota Legislature
  • Write/edit reports and newsletter updating and summarizing legislative activities and departmental actions
  • Research legislative issues and City policies and initiatives
  • Update City elected officials and department heads regarding legislative actions
  • Other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:
Occasional standard office setting with frequent off-site attendance at meetings, including at or near the state Capitol area; frequent travel between office buildings to attend meetings and committee hearings.

Required Qualifications:

Required Education:
Some post-high school education, preferably with coursework in political science, economics, social sciences, public policy, or humanities. BA preferred.

No experience required however, working knowledge of legislative processes is preferred.

Licenses:
Must possess, and continue to maintain, a Class D driver's license.

Equivalency:
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.

Background Check:
The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought.   • Must provide own transportation to and from outside meetings (mileage reimbursement provided).
  • Familiarity with the Minnesota legislature website is preferred.
